Set in the
1940s – early 1950s era of Empire Bay, a fictional recreation of New York, Los
Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Detroit, the game starts with the protagonist Vito
Scaletta, looking at an old photo album of his and narrating his story in a
voice over. Vito was born in 1925 to a poor family in Sicily, who immigrates a
few years later to Empire Bay, which turns their situation even worse. Growing
up, Vito befriends a local criminal named Joe Barbara, with whom Vito pulls of
Robberies and other crimes. One day Vito gets caught during a heist and is
given a choice, to go to jail or join the army. He chooses the latter. He
becomes a part of the troop that helps liberate Sicily during Operation Husky
in the World War II, where he is shot and send home on leave. He also learns
that his father had a lot of debts before he died. Joe helps Vito get
discharged through his Mafia connections and helps Vito become a member of one
of the Mafia families. Life after that turns out to be deadly for Vito and the
people around him.
The game
features many good things. There are about 30-40 vehicles in the game and they
all have their own unique tight handling (because they’re all vintage cars).
The game gives you the right feeling of a 1940s city. The players can interact with everything in
the environment in two ways, for example, when interacting with a car, two
buttons map to two different actions. The violent action makes Vito break the
car’s window and enter it while the silent action makes Vito pick the lock. The
guns are amazing. The full power and weight of each gunshot is displayed in the
damage caused. Player’s can refuel their cars when they run out of gas too.
That’s sick!!
The graphics
are awesome as well. For a game released in 2007 and using the ever so amazing
PhysX, the game looks and feels like the best Vintage themed Mafia game. Cloth
fluttering feels very realistic and is one of the reasons why I love PhysX. The
character animations are also very detailed. The rain feels good but not very
wet, I mean, usually you would feel the character behave differently when it
rains, but in this game, it didn’t appeal much to me. But I must say, the game
does LOOK awesome!!!
The story of
the game is obviously the same as that of the movie but with additions of recreated characters from the Amazing Spider-man comics, like
Kraven the hunter and Carnage. The game follows after the defeat of both Dr.
Curt Connors and the mutants that followed in the first game; and the death of
Gwen Stacy. Peter Parker, the true identity of Spider-man, has to face multiple
dangers that are brought upon New York City. Will Spider-man be able to overcome
his weaknesses and contain the rapidly occurring crimes taking place in New
York city and defeat his greatest enemies in time? It’s up to you!
The gameplay
of the game is very twitchy! The controls are very easy. The fighting moves are
very awkward and the side missions can get very monotonous. The web rush mode
feels the same as before and can be a much more effective way of reaching your
destination quicker. The costumes offered in the game are awesome. Some are
hilarious and some are badass, and they all offer different advantages. The
story is extremely small for a superhero game. Honestly, I expected much more
and felt really disappointed. The characters lack emotion and so does the game.
The greatest part and the only part that made me extremely satisfied and
probably the only reason I got the game, is the “Web Swinging”. Extremely
realistic and fun web swinging can keep you occupied for hours. That is one
thing that you should never leave out when playing the game!
Now the
graphics, don’t expect much from the game in terms of looks. Although the game
does deliver the comic's feeling very nicely, the city is pretty dull. I don’t mean the textures and the buildings
and all. It is a very nice representation of New York City but what turns down
the enthusiasm and the liveliness of the city is the game’s lighting and
colour. The game feels pretty tired in my opinion
The gameplay, compared to the previous FarCry games,
shows improvement, making the game feel more realistic. The shooting mechanics
are much better and give the user a better feel for the weight of the gun every
time it is shot with. The driving differs realistically for each vehicle and
each terrain. Hunting can really get you glued to your seat, be it on the
ground or even under water animals that you’re after. Then there’s crafting.
With each mission complete, Jason gets the opportunity to craft certain items,
with what he hunts, that will help him with his survival. These include
pouches, arrows, medicines and a bunch of other stuff. Progressing through the
game gives you skill points and these points allow you to upgrade Jason with
special abilities. This is a cliché, but what make it worth the while are the
tattoos that are inked onto your arm each time you upgrade.
The graphics are naturally beautiful and bring out the ambiance and realism of the wilderness of Rook Island. Shadows and lighting are precise when it comes to roaming inside the forests. The leaves and bushes
feel amazing. The character graphics are nicely done and the vehicle textures
are also amazing. The nighttime graphics need improvement but I guess that
doesn’t really matter much to a gameplay junkie than to a graphic junkie. I
guess I can’t really say any more without spoiling the game anymore, but trust
me, what I’ve written here is just a tiny bit of the vast game you’ll
experience in FarCry 3.
The story could have been molded better. There is an
unusual sidetrack in the story that makes you go “whaaaa?”. The endings are
kind of plain. Yes, there are multiple endings. The missions vary very well but
they do not give you an enthusiastic kick each time. The villain Vaas is really
amazing and the character Citra, ahem, she’ll keep you attended, hehe. 
The game features
amazing gameplay! Players can use their cell phones to hack into almost
everything that is connected to the ctOS system! Hacking into a camera on a high
wall gives you a wider view of your surroundings, enabling your vision to reach
places that you can’t physically reach! Bust a getaway driver by using the
street lights to slow him down or using a blocker to smash him to a stop or
even blow up a steam pipe from under the road to take him down for good! Use
jam coms to interrupt a call for backup or police, giving you just enough space
to get off the radar! Trouble escaping a massive heat level and an annoying
helicopter at night? Disrupt the chopper’s signals and Blackout the entire
city, then escape into the darkness to never be found again! The good stuff keeps
coming whilst playing the game! The story isn’t the only thing that’ll
entertain you. The game features many mini games like Chess, drinking games and
even 8-bit alien invasion games! The vehicles in the game feature distinct
looks and handling that offers the right amount of variety for you to select
from! There’s so much more! Wanna know? Better go play the game! :D
